<\/p>\nSLC is involved in the Wolverhampton Railway Station Redevelopment as programme co-ordinator and were pleased that another milestone has been reached this week after full demolition of Wolverhampton\u2019s old railway station building was completed.<\/p>\n

Ground works are now being carried out to pave the way for piling to start this month on the foundations for phase two construction of the new station building.<\/p>\n
It is another major step forward in the development, which is part of the city\u2019s \u00a3150million Interchange scheme delivering improvements to bus, tram and train connectivity.<\/p>\n
Once the railway station is completed in early 2021, final works will begin to connect the station to a new Metro extension, creating a fully integrated transport hub with the neighbouring bus station.<\/p>\n
Phase one of the new railway station opened to the public at the end of May and was handed over to West Midlands Railway (WMR).<\/p>\n
It includes six ticket vending machines, new British Transport Police, toilet, accessibility and baby changing facilities, three retail units ready to be fitted out, and train crew accommodation.<\/p>\n
Completion of phase two will deliver three more retail units, as well as a customer waiting room and help point.<\/p>\n
The development works have been cleverly designed in two phases to ensure they do not impact on train services from Wolverhampton.<\/p>\n
City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Economy, Councillor Stephen Simkins, said: \u201cAs prepare for this month\u2019s Wolverhampton Business Week the railway station is a beacon of the multi-billion-pound regeneration that is taking place across our city.<\/p>\n
\u201cProjects like the railway station, and other capital schemes like the i9 office development and Civic Halls are critical to our recovery from Covid-19 \u2013 creating jobs, driving further investment and giving our businesses confidence to get back on their feet and grow.<\/p>\n
\u201cWorking under strict Covid-19 safety guidelines, contractors, Galliford Try, have made good progress on the phase 2 works and it won\u2019t be long before we see the second part of our fantastic new railway station coming out of the ground.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe completed Interchange will connect train, tram and bus in one place and will ultimately provide a gateway to our city that we can all enjoy using – and be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street, who chairs the West Midlands Combined Authority, added: \u201cWith demolition complete we are another step closer to delivering a major transport hub in Wolverhampton city centre.<\/p>\n
“This new rail, Metro and bus interchange will offer travellers a journey fully integrated into the wider West Midlands transport network, including HS2.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs well as providing a modern gateway to the city centre for visitors it will be a catalyst for new investment, contributing to the jobs and growth the area needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Associate Director, Chris Jones, said: \u201cThe demolition of the parcel shed and old station building has now been completed in a safe and timely manner.<\/p>\n
\u201cGalliford Try are progressing with removing the existing slabs and preparing for piling which is due to commence within the next fortnight.<\/p>\n
\u201cPhase two works are progressing well and we will soon start to focus on planning for the eventual handover of the new facilities once they are built.\u201d<\/p>\n
