Lucy Dyer joined SLC Rail last year as an Apprentice Engineer.\u00a0 She\u2019s nearly two years into a five-year Level 6 Civil Engineer Degree Apprenticeship BEng (Hons) and can see first-hand the benefits that apprenticeships can bring to businesses and individuals:<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always been interested in Civil Engineering – it runs in my family!\u00a0 My dad and my sister are both engineers.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wish I knew about the apprenticeship route when I was 16 years old and thinking about career choices, because I much prefer being able to apply what I learn in the real-world.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until I was older that I knew that apprenticeships were a real alternative to university.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy apprenticeship means I\u2019m learning as I go and putting it into practice straight away. \u00a0SLC Rail has been really supportive and I’m benefiting from invaluable mentorship from my colleagues.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0I\u2019m also able to start working towards professional qualifications with the Institution of Civil Engineers \u2013 in addition to gaining real work experience\u00a0<\/span>on a variety of rail projects<\/span>\u00a0– which may actually put me in a better position than those who\u2019ve chosen the university route. I\u2019m so glad I picked an apprenticeship and I would recommend to others to consider this option.”<\/span><\/p>\n Meet Annalise who started as an Apprentice Administrator<\/strong><\/p>\n A<\/span>nna<\/span>lise Wa<\/span>ll joined SLC Ra<\/span>il\u00a0a<\/span>s\u00a0a<\/span>n\u00a0A<\/span>pprentice\u00a0A<\/span>dministra<\/span>tor nea<\/span>rly four yea<\/span>rs\u00a0a<\/span>go when she wa<\/span>s 18. She ha<\/span>s found it\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0grea<\/span>t ca<\/span>reer choice tha<\/span>t ha<\/span>s given her the cha<\/span>nce to grow in confidence\u00a0a<\/span>nd experience: \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d never previously considered the ra<\/span>il industry\u00a0a<\/span>s\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0ca<\/span>reer but decided to go for it when I sa<\/span>w this opportunity\u00a0a<\/span>dvertised.\u00a0 The yea<\/span>r-long\u00a0a<\/span>pprenticeship involved\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0mixture of study\u00a0a<\/span>nd office work.
